Update Raspbian with "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade"

Postby rolf » Sun Sep 06, 2015 3:31 pm

Has anyone already updated Raspbian on their printer with the following command:
Code: Select all
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

Also, has anyone run
Code: Select all
rpi-update
to update the kernel?

I have not yet run them, but
Code: Select all
apt-get -s upgrade
lists 114 packages that need to be upgraded...

Support: Any comments for or against updating Raspbian?

Thanks, Rolf.

Short answer: No. don't do it.

Long answer: Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, Don't do it.

Ok i'll get serious. If you run the update it will first of take hours and I mean 12 to 14 hours, and it will wreck havoc on most of the packages that we use like python, node and apache that run the software of the printer.
There was a time when we updated it just to see what would happen and nothing worked after that the printer would not even boot and if you run an kernel update, congratulations because now the printer wont even connect to the network because the WiFi dongle driver is not supported in newer kernel versions.

Those two commands are the single most easy way to mess up everything about your printer.

I am not one for getting on a soapbox and this is not targeted at Rolf specifically (I am glad he asked first!), but this is one of the things that kinda bothers me about the open source movement and the expectation that any device that has open source components should be allowed to be tampered with.

I know that people like to hack at the Raspberry Pi, but considering the custom software written around it for the Nano, updating it without knowing what is required is a foolish thing to do. A vendor is not obligated to provide a repair image in case of customer screw up. If you decide to do it, you need to live with the consequences, which could possibly include bricking your product and/or potential lost warranty coverage due to tampering.

If iBox hasn't done it already, they may want to disable access to the apt-get and rpi-update applications to protect the integrity of the printer in the future.

You know I think that would be a good idea but then again if it ain't broke don't fix it. Goes to both us and the customers.

We might need to run an update some day in an alternate universe and maybe that's why we never disabled it. Then again you add sudo in front of it and still brick it, assuming that it's only disabled for the user pi.

Anyway I'm happy no one has done the update and hope no one ever does it in the future.
